can you input a bow marking over a long note, but not at the beginning of the note?
I want to input a bowing halfway through the rhythmic value of a semibreve (or other long held notes), but I don't know how to do it or if it's possible. I only know how to input a bow marking directly on top of the note in question, but that isn't of any use for this issue.

What kind of bowing are you trying to show?

Just an upbow/downbow
Part the note into 2 tied ones and apply the bow marking to the 2nd
I have some doubts though whether this makes any musical sense

OK, so put it on top of the note and then increase the X offset in the Inspector to move it.
(Out of curiosity, how is such a bow marking executed "halfway through the rhythmic value"?
Isn't the bow already in motion from the start of that "rhythmic value"? Is the bow changing direction? If it is, why not add another note at that point?)
String players (and wind players) know how to play very long notes. String sections will stagger bowing.
Unless you want the particular effect of the bow changing, don't worry about a bow marking.
