MIDI out to Kawai ES920 Issues

• Dec 7, 2024 - 17:28

I'm using MuseScore Version 4.4.3.242971445 with a MIDI connection to my Kawai ES920 piano.
Here's my setup:
Edit> Preferences> Audio & MIDI>
MIDI input> USB MIDI (this is the only option)
MIDI output> USB MIDI (this is the only option)

All MIDI input functionality works perfectly.

The MIDI output only works correctly with Modern E. Piano, Organ, Harpsichord/Mallets voices on my ES920 piano. All other piano voices only produce a soft percussive sound.

I would like to find a way to use all of the piano voices on my ES920 piano.

Check your owner's manual to see if your keyboard is GM (General MIDI) compliant...
...and/or try this:
Create a sample score within MuseScore Studio using instruments that have comparable sounds to those on your Kawai. In other words, if your Kawaii can sound like a saxophone, flute, guitar, etc. choose saxophone, flute, guitar, etc. in a sample score. Export the score as MIDI, load it into your Kawai (either directly or via usb stick), and let the Kawai play the MIDI file.
Does it sound like the scored instruments?

The SMF (Standard MIDI File) format is one of the most common and widely compatible sequence formats used for storing sequence data. It allows different equipment manufacturers to all use, for instance, MIDI Instrument patch #33 to play acoustic bass. Sound quality may vary from vendor to vendor. depending upon how accurate their instrument samplings are.

The Kawai ES920 manual and specification don't specifically state that the MIDI functionality is GM compliant.

I created a test score with harpsichord, organ, and piano to correspond with the instrument selection buttons on the ES920. When I played the score through the MIDI connection, the instrument voices didn't change to the different instruments in the score. They only played the instrument of the instrument button pressed on the ES920. Unfortunately, this only works for some instruments and doesn't work for piano.
