Newbie question - How to make a footnote

I want to put a footnote at the bottom of the first page of my score. I tried making it a footer that appears on odd pages. My score is only 2 pages long, so there are no unwanted repetitions. But, I need the footnote to start with an asterisk and can't seem to get it. Can't seem to access special characters when making a footer or edit the footer by double clicking it. I doubt I'm using the best approach and would appreciate any suggestions. I learned there are limitations to editing footers.
