I suspect you will want to easily control the two staves dynamics. I would suggest you use the I button to add another instrument then connect the barlines to make them look like a singe Grand Staff. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/barlines#connect-barlines

Melody line and descant are usually two separate singing lines. The Descant is often a solo. We both have the same idea.

I know what a descant is ;-) What confused me, was the word "linked", considering the meaning of descant.

You don't want a linked staff here, if it were linked, the notes from one would be the same as the notes on the other, this is useful for guitar, where the normal staff and the tab staff should be linked, so entireing a note in one gets reflected in the other
