New feature - bis

• May 17, 2018 - 09:27

In my score I have 2 bars that I'd like to repeat rather than write them out - the 'bis' repeat would be ideal for this (please see the attached file). I tried various combinations of repeats and none of them worked. I also tried customising various lines - again without success.

It is common in traditional music for a tune to split into 2 parts - A and B - where each part is played through twice in a performance - 2 As then 2 Bs - then the whole tune can be played again starting from the beginning of the A part.

Looking at the score I attached previously - the A part starts at bar #1 and ends at bar #4, the B part starts at bar #5 in the score, and continues to bar #10.

As written the B part comprises of 6 bars - first 2 bars (bars #5 and #6) are repeated, then the final 4 bars (bars #7 to #10) are played once - so it is played as 2+2+4 bars - thats a total of 8 bars. The the whole B part is repeated from bar #5 as described above.

This arrangement is not unusual in traditional music. To use regular repeat bars and other repeats may work, but it becomes messy, difficult to convey meaning, and to read. Far easier with the bis-style of repeat - which is what traditional musicians are used to seeing.
