I am getting no sound/playback on my computer. Everything else seems to be working ok.

Check the setting in Preferences > I/O and check the soundfonts in Synthesizer

ok thanks, I do have sound through my speakers but can't get it through my headphones. I can deal with that. However now when I click on notes the note palette does not show and I can write only quarter notes.

Try to plug in your earphones before starting MuseScore.
