3.6.2 Cannot figure out how to set up a first ending to play 3 Xs.
I keep following the directions I find in the repeat section of the Manual, but no joy.
I have changed the repeat list using period and/or commas but that just stops the play after bar 2 in the example.
I am missing something. :)

I find the different Inspector/Properties layouts in MS 3.6.2 and MS 4.0.2 very confusing. Here is a quick guide for the example score originally attached by the OP:
MS 3.6.2
Repeat measure: Play count = 4
1st Volta: Text Line Details > Begin Text = "1. 2. 3.", and Volta > Repeat List = 1, 2, 3
2nd Volta: Text Line Details > Begin Text = "4.", and Volta > Repeat List = 4
MS 4.0.2
Repeat measure: Play count = 4
1st Volta: Volta > Text tab > Beginning text = "1. 2. 3.", and Volta > Style tab > Repeat List = 1, 2, 3
2nd Volta: Volta > Text tab > Beginning text = "4.", and Volta > Style tab > Repeat List = 4
