page numbers
Page numbers by default appear as footers- is it possible to place the page number in the Header. It seems strange that the first and last page remain un-numbered.

Last page is not unnumbered. First is by default indeed, but that can get changed. Also whether page numbers show in footer or header.
See Format > Style > Header/Footer

That is great but I cannot find any reference in the manual telling me how to make changes. It appears that the Header/Footer window can contain special symbols to define the content. A list of these symbols flashes on briefly when the mouse hovers over one of the fields. It all takes a bit of finding for the uninitiated.

Hold your mouse over any header or footer field and the info stays up so you can read it. Don't move your mouse so fast.
